Managers Report 2011

Thank you to you all for attending this AGM.

Our 2010 Annual Henry Guillard Memorial Golf Day kicked off the start of our new financial year in November. Howick Golf Club was the venue once again and another perfect day was shining for us. An awesome day was had by all who entered. Numbers were down on last year, the squash side of the numbers are holding up but the retired contingent of ex members seem to be dwindling off, which I guess is understandable when you look at the ages of some of the ex members. Sorry guys

Interclub, senior, junior and mini junior club nights all started at the beginning of March this year. Entries for autumn round of interclub were 3 Men’s team and 3 women’s teams. Entries increased for the winter season of seniors to 4 men’s and 3 women’s and in spring interclub 5 men’s and 2 women’s. Masters fielded 3 teams in Winter and in Spring competitions.

Congratulations to the teams who won their division

Senior Autumn:           Men’s 1 Winners

Winter Masters:           Men’s 1 Winners

Senior Winter:             Men’s 1 equal winners,          Men’s 3 3rd,     Men’s 12 3rd

Masters Spring:           Men’s 1 winners

Senior Spring:             W8 (Lynda’s team) 3rd

Junior club night (7pm – 9pm) was run by Richard Van Rynbach again this year. Our older junior section tapered off a lot again this year and left not many juniors attending. This is a real shame as we need juniors to come thru the grades to replace the broken down seniors.

Thank you Richard, for your help with coaching the juniors each Friday night.

Mini juniors (5.30pm – 7pm ) unfortunately was not as well supported this year as it was last year, and would like to thank Heather Saies for running this program and persevering with it each Friday night. Thank you to all those who helped Heather out each Friday night including the Dads at the bar

3 tournaments were held this year 2x A2 and a B grade together with Auckland Junior Open. Our tournaments all had around the 115 entrants entered and were all run really well by the huge band of volunteers we had. Unfortunately our numbers dropped just before the start of the Auckland Juniors as this was to be a selection tournament for the junior Worlds, but all of the squad were stuck in Singapore with the ash cloud and therefore had to withdraw.

Thank you to Mt Wellington Foundation Ltd for sponsoring the Junior Open

To the squash committee with Glenn Hurley at the helm thank you for all you have done in making our tournaments run smoothly, it makes so much difference when you have a team of keen volunteers to help out rather than just one or two

Thank you also to all the controllers who gave up their time to help

4 trivia nights were organized to run thru the year with 6 to 8 teams of 6 people in attendance each time. Thanks to Todd Preston for running these fun nights. These are a lot of fun so keep your eye out for the poster when it comes out and book a night here with us.

Super Champs had 5 teams entered from Panmure this year. Unfortunately no team went thru to the Nationals, but team spirits were high anyway.

Club Champs was sponsored by Pak’nSave Sylvia Park for the second time this year. Entries were very poor again this year even though we changed the date to the month members wanted it to be held. Each of the winners, runners up and 3rd places of each division received gift baskets donated by Pak’nSave Sylvia Park.

Thank you to Pak’nSave Sylvia Park.

Our membership levels have dropped throughout the year and we are now sitting around 285 where we normally used to sit. Before the economic crisis hit us we were gaining huge numbers of new members but as money tightened up so do people playing squash. This has not been unique to the younger generation as there have been many of the older generation who have had to pull the pin on squash due to a shortage of money.

We were a little successful this year in obtaining funding for operational cost. This is always a bonus when you find trusts that will still occasionally approved running costs.

The new court ventilation system was installed this year and is up and running. This system is designed to stop the wet walls by replacing the old air inside with new air from the outside. We have only installed part 1 of this, as a heating system is required to make the units run correctly. Part 2 will be applied for by way of grants next year.

To our Club statistician Gary Lyons, thank you once again for another year of your tireless work behind the scenes with the grading list updates, additions, deletions etc. Well done Gary and thank you again for all your work.

Thank you to everyone who has helped out at the club this year in one way or another, we really could not run this club without your help.

To the management committee, Stu, Nigel, Dave, Todd and Anthony, I thank you for your efforts again this year in the running of the club. It is hard for a club in this climate to keep its head above water, but rest assured, we are not the only squash club or any club for that matter in these tough predicaments. All we can do is keep on keeping on and trying our best.

I would personally like to thank to committee for their support over this tough personal last year. I could not have got thru the year without their understanding and support, and especially after my diagnosis in August, subsequent surgery and now 5 months of treatment. Thank you so much I really do appreciate it. Being able to at times work from home and be able to do everything from there including opening the front door, has been a godsend. The only thing missing at the was me.

If I have missed out thanking anyone, I apologize, it was not intentional.

Thank you to all of you for the support

To ALL of our members, thank you for being apart of our family here at Panmure Squash, we love having you here.

To each of you and your family, I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and hope to see you all back here next year.

Pam Gilbert

Club Manager

2011 PRESIDENTS REPORT by Stu Hoffman

This report is a brief summary of the year past for Panmure Squash and an opportunity for me to express thanks to everyone for the work done to keep us going.

Last year saw both Darren & Geoff step down from their respective roles of President and heading up the Squash committee.

These guys did an awesome job over the two years they were in office and helped to turn us around in a positive direction again.

They left some pretty big shoes to fill (well one pair was big anyway) and it would be fair to say that we have struggled to maintain the same levels of participation that we saw in 2009 and 2010.

This has meant that we have lost some ground from the progress we made and along with the fact that we were unable to obtain any sponsorship for our tournaments meant that we didn’t host an Open tournament in 2011 which has traditionally been a highlight of our squash calendar.

Our membership numbers have also dropped off from last years highs of around 330 to the 285 level.

These are challenges for the committees in the New Year once we can overcome the challenge of actually getting people on to committees in the first place.

Financially we are keeping our heads above water and returned a profit for the year in spite of our membership numbers and hence our subs income being down on last year.

The profit was mainly due to the fact that Pam was able to secure funds from charitable grants that we could use for our operational expenses.

This year has been a struggle in many ways not least for Pam our manager who has had personal health issues but has still managed to keep us going in spite of everything.

I’m not sure how Pam did it but it has been an awesome effort so a big thanks from us all.

I would also like to make mention of the loss of one our true blue members Terry Cooksey who passed away, in September this year.

Terry was one of the best guys you could hope to meet and will be missed badly by his mates at the club. Some of us were lucky enough to share his wedding with him before he passed away and the club was only just big enough to fit everyone in after his funeral.

Thanks again for the efforts from those people on our committees and other members, who help out when required, let’s all keep making the effort to keep Panmure Squash going. Whether you are a competitive player, social player or even just use the gym we have something here that is worth supporting.

Cheers

Stu Hoffman

President.

Matters arising

-          Membership. Dave Gould said that membership drive is required next year. Wally Stamp concurred and advised that the incoming committee should come up with a plan for obtaining new members. Financial Report

Cashflow has continued to be positive and there is profit but this was only because of grants for operating expenses obtained.

Stu noted that there was also an improvement in bar profitability due to an improvement in cost of bar purchases (mainly draught beer and wine)

Subscriptions down but with the increase in bar profit and grant,  cashflow was kept positive.

Steve Dennison recommended we approach Council for a rent holiday. Pam advised that Council has stopped contributions towards our rent.

Glenn Hurley questioned whether we could keep obtaining grants. Pam advised that she would continue to make applications but there are no guarantees.

Stu Hoffman noted that squash levies increased by the cost of inflation but will be lower next season due to drop in membership.
