Managers Report 2008
In January this year our web site was launched. This has had good reviews, by members and non members. Thanks to Anthony Keeling, who designed the site and put up with me continually changing the look and contents, until it looked right before its launch. Anthony still does the site updating, whenever it is needed and is a member of the club. His company name is Beer Fridge Ltd. Thank you to Auckland City Council who funded the web site.
To kick the 2008 social New Year off, the club organized our annual cricket day. This was held at the Pt England reserve in March. The weather was perfect and a fun day was had by all. It was a good family day out. Thank you to Nicola Hudson for providing the sausage sizzles.
With not many positions filled at the 2007 AGM, we started off the year on the back foot. This continued thru to August 2008, when a crisis meeting was called and Squash and Social committees were formed. This has somewhat taken the pressure off me, of having to complete all roles. Functions and tournaments will now be organized by these groups and not me.
Thank you to Dave Gould for organizing the meeting, to get people off their rear ends and helping the club out. Thank you to Geoff Owen and Tessa Anderson for undertaking the roles of Convenor of their respective committees.
The lack of club captains going into the 2008 season, with 4 tournaments ahead, was daunting. Tournaments, interclub, club champs, super champs etc all had to be organized with no-one to do it. I guess one way to learn how to do something new, is to get thrown in at the deep end. I managed to do the first tournament successfully, but thankfully Fraser Spencer offered to help me out after that.
A big thank you to everyone that helped out on control for the tournaments, without your help we would not be able to successfully run these events.
To Sandy Jameson and Mal, who stepped in and ran the bar, whenever they were asked to, throughout the year, for tournaments and functions, a big thank you also.
A huge thank you to our 2008 Tournament sponsors for the year

Junior Club Night was not able to get underway until June this year due to the lack of someone to run it. Chris Wang stepped up to the mark and took on the task. Chris with the help of the A & B Grade Men each Friday night got the juniors back on track. To Chris and the guys, thank you very much. We have to remember that these juniors are our up and coming successors and should be nurtured. We have a big gap in age groups in squash generally at present and therefore we cannot afford to lose these potential champions.
In June we held a fun tourney for all members, but mainly for new members to meet other members. We did not have a huge turnout, but those who participated had a good time.
To all the people who helped out for the Open Tournament and Super Champs, when I was held back in Australia, after the sudden death of my brother in June, I sincerely thank you. It showed, that in time of need, you were prepared to drop what ever you were doing, to help out, when asked by Tessa and Fraser, without question. Thank you all once again, it really was appreciated.
This year we held our 3rd Calcutta tournament at Panmure. This event is a successful fundraiser for teams going away to the National Team Event. Thank you once again to Keith for organizing this, raising around $1,000.
Interclub this year we had teams entered into Senior Autumn, Masters Winter, Senior Winter, Masters Spring, & Senior Spring. A total of 37 teams playing in these competitions. Congratulations to the teams that won their respective divisions.
Panmure also entered 7 teams into the District Super Champs competition. Out of the 7 teams, 4 teams won their divisions. These teams were B Grade Men and Women, B2 Grade Men and C Grade Men. These teams were then eligible to travel to Whangarei for the B Grades and Wellington for the C Grade to compete for the National Title. Unfortunately they were not lucky this year. And unfortunately there is no National competition for B2 Grade.
In September this year I organized a Trivial Pursuit evening. We had 8 teams of 6 entered. This was a fun evening with teams getting right into trying to work out the correct answers. This will definitely be on next year’s calendar Thank you to Trudy Englebretsen, General Manager of Squash Auckland for organizing her partner Brent to be quizmaster and Trudy scoring the questions. Thank you also to the sponsors

Box League was introduced to the club in October, by the new squash committee and has been a huge success. More in house competitions was one thing that was bought out in the recent survey results compiled by Squash Auckland. These leagues are open to any Panmure member. They run over the course of a month each month and you play 4 to 5 games depending on the number of people in your group. Thank you to Geoff and his team for getting this off the ground and to Geoff for maintaining the monthly results and subsequent month’s draw.
Congratulations to Glen Hurley and Kaye Hoffman who represented Panmure in the Auckland Team at the Masters Nationals Teams Event that were held in Christchurch in October. The Auckland team came 2nd. Well done guys
We have recently had the court floors scrubbed and re-taped and they have come up brilliantly. The amount of gunk taken off the floor was alarming. We received a grant to do this and will now keep the floors in this top condition. Thank you to Mt Wellington Charitable Trust for funding this
Squash Auckland’s new Web Site was launched late last year. Many upgrades have been made along the way by Auckland’s General Manger, Trudy Englebretsen, to serve the needs of players and clubs. The web site is full of all sorts of information relating to playing squash, running a club, Board of Directors information or anything else relating to squash. The creation of an online interclub system has seen team entries and results entered online by Club Managers. Players can also tap into the interclub site and keep a track of how their team is doing on a weekly basis. This was an expensive creation, but a very popular and successful one www.squashauckland.org.nz
Squash New Zealand this year, introduced the new online player history section, which enables players to check their games played & points online 24/7. This is operated by New Zealand Squash not Auckland Squash. Any queries regarding points must come thru the Club Manager and not directly to Squash New Zealand or Squash Auckland.
Funding this year, as predicted, has become harder to receive. Poker machine money is down, therefore less money to distribute to clubs like ourselves. Without the cash flow from these organizations, it makes it very tough for clubs to keep afloat, and that is where we are at the moment. Thank you to Sarah Loomb and Dave Gould who have organized raffles and tote tickets over the last couple of months, for members to sell, to people outside of the club, to try to increase our cash flow. Unfortunately this has been rejected by some members, who have returned tickets totally unsold. This is very disheartening for those who put their time and effort into organization. For this club to keep going, the members need to help out, when things are organized to raise money. For future raffles we need 100% support, from members as it is these sorts of events that will help keep the club afloat in the future. Keeping a club afloat should be a team effort.
I am applying to funding agencies all year, but what we receive, should be a bonus, not a necessity. We as a club have to gel together to make the club work and support things the club has on. This is where outsiders can help, by purchasing tickets or coming along to functions with you. More bums on seats would help the bar especially, and increase the numbers of the same small group of fervent supporters that support us daily.
Funding Received
| 2002/2003 | $64,700.00 | | 2003/2004 | $85,114.44 | | 2004/2005 | $82,756.78 | | 2005/2006 | $48,494.11 | | 2006/2007 | $71,859.00 | | 2007/2008 | $45,000.00 | | Total | $397,924.33 |
This year we were able to replace all the equipment in the gym, which was way overdue. Those members who are using the gym are more than happy with the new acquisitions Thank you to Mt Wellington Charitable Trust for funding this.
I have represented Panmure on the Squash Auckland Board of Directors as a Director, for the past 2 years. This year I was nominated to stand for re-election, for a further two years. This was accepted at the Squash Auckland AGM last night, 19th November, 2008 for a further 2 year term.
Membership at present is going up and down, so hard to put a firm number to it. We lose some and gain some. It is down on last year, but remaining around the 260 / 265.
We introduced the member incentive scheme this year, but so far only 3 people have introduced new members. More members would certainly increase the cash flow.
To Gary Lyons thank you for your continued work as club statistician. This is a very much behind the scenes job, but a very important one for players.
To Tessa Anderson, thank you so much for the work you have done this year and for the support you have given to the club and me. It really is appreciated.
A huge, huge thank you goes to Bryan Wentworth for standing in again this year, as President and Treasurer. Bryan without your loyal support, I don’t honestly know where the club would be. I also thank you for all the support you have given me over the last 18 years, both as Caterer and Manager.
Next year, with a full compliment of committee members, you should see more happening around the club. It will be necessary to increase membership numbers, bar turnover, private functions, club functions, raffles etc to generate funds. Everything around us is increasing in price, for example, going on the prices of utilities today it takes:
- 33 full paying members subs to pay for electricity
- 33 full paying members subs to pay for cleaning
- 13 full paying members subs to pay for water
As members you should be aware of the costs, but lights are still left on in changing rooms / toilets day and night, taps not turned off properly and stuff lying around on tables etc that should have been cleaned up and put away, but now the cleaners have to do it.
If I have missed thanking anyone out, I apologize; it was not done on purpose. Thank you, thank you, and thank you to all
To you and your family, I would like to wish you all a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and wish to see you all back here next year to face a positive and productive year together.
